THE CHALLENGE OF POVERTY IN AFRICA AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP DEVELOPMENT STRATEGIES FOR REDEMPTION

ANUKAM, AMAOBI ISAAC

Department of Marketing, Faculty of Management Sciences

Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka

ABSTRACT

Poverty is a plague, a misery which most African countries suffer today without consistent strategies to overcome it. This paper argues that the best cure and redemption lies within these countries, not on/in foreign aids from developed nations. Observe that these nations have their own teething problems. It lies in each countries human capital management, and encouraging more small business activities among her populace. Entrepreneurship orientation (EO), is the constructive destruction of the over burdened economic status quo, (Schumpeter, 1961). The African economies (Nigerian economy in particular) cannot carry the responsibility of providing jobs for her teeming graduates alone. Therefore, entrepreneurship orientation through education or by various government deliberate policies will assist in remedying the problem of unemployment and knocking poverty off-balance. The substance of this paper is to appraise extant literature on the essence of entrepreneurship and job creation opportunities, and propose an outline of fifty-five (55), small business ideas any one can invest in, with a mindset, small capital and show the prospects how to start. It is a conceptual paper and a review of extant literature, with intersperse of personal comments born out of experience.

DIMFWINA NUNGKOPBA TONGSHINEN, MURTALA MUHAMMAD ALAMAI & AIMAS RUBAINU GARKUWA

Hospitality and Tourism Management Department, Federal Polytechnic Bauchi, Bauchi State- Nigeria.

Abstract

The use of ICT has turn out to be the motivating force in the transfer of education of today’s Technical, vocational education and training (TVET) in the world. Though ICT has become increasingly available means for instructors to use in their training activities, most instructors in the Hospitality are still incompetent to incorporate it in their instruction and learning processes. ICT is used to improve training excellence anywhere, though quality is very costly to produce, or to substitute for the lack of instructors or training opportunities that cannot be made accessible with conventional training Practices. This paper examines the challenges of incorporating ICT into Polytechnics Hospitality instructional practices and the obstacles threatening implementation. Therefore the necessity for friendly ICT education policies, suggestions to integrate ICT into Polytechnics Hospitality and Tourism instruction and learning practices are provided to assist the instructors to the use of ICT in order to help the students acquire theoretical knowledge and grounded in real practice. It is the argument of this paper that though creating an ICT environment for teaching and learning of Hospitality and Tourism in Nigeria may seem difficult, it would improve students’ success in Hospitality, hence the push of this paper.

ABSTRACT

The President-elect in Nigeria won the 2015 elections on the groundswell of popular support, and the promise of change. Change is a strong word that portends the modification, amendment, and adjustment of the basic assumptions that underlie our reforms and developmental efforts. The challenge now is how changes would be felt in all sectors of the nation. The thrust of this paper is that education sector alone can bring about total changes expected in Nigeria, if is hinged on educational liberalism. The paper defines change as the process of becoming different; in order to achieve this, there is need for ‘transforming education’. The paper gives a brief account of how the past governmental reformation programs that did involve education failed. The paper argues that a transformed educational system with its basis on liberal education will empower individuals and prepare them to deal with complexity, diversity, and change. To this end, the paper recommends an education system that brings about change in building an efficient and effective polity, inspiring a shared vision, remodeling a corrupt polity, building character and integrity in our leaders, redefining the imperatives of leadership, instilling core values in our youths, and creating the Nigerian dream that will inspire patriotism and commitment in the citizenry.

Department of Mass Communication, Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi

ABSTRACT

It has been acknowledged that farmers can use improved information to advance their productivity and profitability as well as contribute to higher rates of agriculture, economic growth and poverty reduction. Fish farming which is said to be predominant in the coastal states of Nigeria is currently one of the varieties of agricultural practices in Jigawa state. fish farmers therefore need variety of information regarding fish farming technologies, construction and management, breeds and spawning, processing, storage and marketing and financing. Several media outlets have been identified as sources of agricultural information as used by National Agricultural Extension and Research Liaison Services and Agricultural Development Project in Jigawa state. While the issue remained how well the fish farmers can access the information and utilize them as appropriate, especially now that many literate hands have venture into this business. This research work appraises the problems and challenges of access to agricultural information and its utilization by fish farmers in the state. The study covers five local governments namely Dutse, Hadeja, Ringim, Gumel and Kazaure Local Government councils. Survey method was adopted and data was collected through the use of questionnaires, and conducting an in-depth interview with some officials from NAERLS, ADP and the state ministry of agriculture. HOW TO CUT CLUTTER IN ANNUAL REPORTS: A CASE FOR NIGERIA

JEHU PHILIP, WABEKWA BUNDI, & OKOH UMALE

Department of Accounting & Business Administration, Faculty of Humanities, Management & Social Sciences, Federal University Kashere,

P.M.B 0182 Gombe, Nigeria.

ABSTRACT

Annual reports are primarily prepared to provide information to fund providers for decision-making, and as a means of stewardship accountability. In recent years however, there has been a paradigm shift to cover interest of other stakeholders as well. Consequently, there has been increase in information disclosure requirements by regulatory authorities, especially in the wake of reporting and corporate failures. This research work aims at determining the causes of increasing complexity and decreasing relevance of corporate reporting in Nigeria. It also seeks to establish the varying perspective of both the Users and Preparers of Annual Reports, as to whether or not the reports contain clutters and how it can be reduced. Clutter in annual reports obscures relevant information and makes it harder for users to identify the key points about a business’s performance. A substantial cause of clutter in annual reports according to the research is the vast array of requirements imposed by regulations, laws, and financial reporting standards. Therefore, over-regulation and over-supervision with too many rules are the main cause of increasing complexity and decreasing relevance of corporate reporting. We used SPSS statistical software to analyse data collected from both Users and Preparers of Annual Reports. They both agree that there are clutters in the reports. Increasing pressure to comply with rules and regulations leads to inclusion of redundant information in the reports. Regulators and standard setters have a key role to play in cutting clutter both by cutting the requirements that they themselves already impose and by guarding against the imposition of unnecessary new disclosures.

MEDIA COVERAGE OF CORRUPTION IN NIGERIA: AN ANALYSIS OF THE SUN AND NEW NIGERIAN NEWSPAPERS

BELLO IBRAHIM HALILU, ABUBAKAR BABA GARBA & ABBA ABDULMUMIN

Department Of Mass Communication Federal Polytechnic Bauchi, Bauchi State

ABSTRACT

The study examines the coverage of corruption issues by the Nigerian Newspapers. It samples two Nigerian Dailies – Daily Sun and New Nigerian Newspapers for the period of one year – June 2013 and May 2014 when corruption was believed to be at its highest peak in Nigeria. At the end of the study, it was discovered that the newspapers did not indeed fulfill their statutory responsibility of watch dogging the society. The coverage was not significant compared to other stories like politics and economy; prominence was also not given to the stories. It was also deduced that the stories are not in-depth as there was little investigation and follow- up enough to set precedence for public discourse. The study therefore suggests that the media embarks on massive sensitization campaigns as well as intensive investigative reporting in order to, not only expose corruption but to follow up the case to its logical prosecution.

ABSTRACT

This research is to ascertain the problems and prospects of Nigerian women in politics in Nigerian context, and to eliminate the discriminative practices against women in politics, and to ensure that discriminative measures are not taken against those that are aspiring for active politics. It is discovered that women, until recently, faced a lot of traditional female constraint, cultural and religious inhibitions in a male dominated society, which means that women were confined to domestic roles at home which prevented them from proving their abilities; and that political posts should not be on the basis of gender, the walls of discrimination against women in politics should be turned down. Also, gender equality should be practiced in this democratic dispensation.

TIJANI, SULEMAN OLATUNJI & DAMISAH, MARY-ANNE OMOKHEFUE (MRS.)

Department of Humanities & Social Sciences, Auchi Polytechnic, Auchi, Edo State.

ABSTRACT

The study aims at examining the nature of the continued relevance of traditional rulers in contemporary Nigerian politics. In spite of the negative impacts of colonialism and westernization on the institutions in pre-colonial period, traditional rulers occupied important position of political authority in African kingdom. The traditional rulers have served as important adjuncts in the administration of post-colonial government in both Nigeria and Africa. Towards the last years of colonial rule, there was a shift from the traditional rulers to the educated elites who eventually succeeded in achieving political independence for the country. This research is of the view that traditional rulers as the custodian of the customs and traditions of their respective areas should be given opportunities on a basis of recommending some of their experiences to the service as members of customary courts; also, traditional rulers have to adopt the spirit of yearly dialogue amongst the subjects; the outcome of the yearly dialogue will create necessary relationship towards community development programme.

N. EKAKA-A

Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt, Nigeria

Abstract

One of the methods of studying the dis-stabilizing effect of the environmental noise on the stability of two interacting mutualistic populations depends on the use of a numerical simulation. The inclusion of the environmental noise has introduced a shift in the neighbourhood of the original stabilization of the unique positive stable co-existence steady-state solution in terms of different stabilizing times. These novel contributions to knowledge and their implication for the effective management of the ecosystem functioning and stability have not been seen elsewhere; these are presented and discussed in this paper.

GENDER (SEX) SELECTION: SCIENTIFIC, RELIGIOUS AND SOCIO-CULTURAL PERSPECTIVES

*MAHMUD YERIMA ILIYASU **SALAMATU MUHAMMAD ADAM

*Department of Biological Sciences, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, Bauchi state, Nigeria

**Department of Arts and Social Sciences, Government Day Secondary School, Jahun, Bauchi

ABSTRACT

Development on the issues of selection of child’s gender/sex was examined and reviewed under scientific, religious and socio-cultural standpoint. The issue of gender selection started more than 300 years ago as gendercide among the Pharaohs of Egypt and barbaric Arabs in the jahiliyya (ignorance) period. The reasons for that has been socio-cultural, religious, political and for family balancing or rebuilding, and preventing sex-linked diseases. Several scientific techniques have been used for selecting the desired sex determinant in fertility clinics and research laboratories, which attracted many ethical, legal and socio-economic implications. Scientist proved that father (male) is the determinant of sex of a child (boy or girl) due to his heterogametic sex genotype (XY), as such mothers (female) should not be blamed for bearing baby girl. The X-chromosome containing sperm and Y-one are in 50:50 ratios and have equal chance of fertilizing the female ovum (large and immotile). In fact the Y-chromosome-containing sperm is less dense, so tends to move faster than the X-one, but God out of his eternal mercy, power and wisdom choose the right sperm (X or Y) and hence the final sex. Male child preference and hatred for females has been the common ugly practice identified among Arabs, Asians and Africans. In China, one child policy is the legislation today, and about 10 million female foetuses have been aborted in India to date. In West Africa (Northern Nigeria in particular), many matrimonial homes collapse, mothers of female maltreated and Girl-child neglected due to son-preference. The modern day Biotechnology methods held a promise in solving the problems of gender selection and so that couples could now have a child of their choice. This study confirms and reaffirm that blaming mothers on giving birth to female is the worst form of savagery and greatest barbaric behaviour ever had in the history of mankind.

ABSTRACT.

It is unimaginable and absolutely out of place to think of a society devoid of religious education. Education have been taken by some scholars as an act of impacting knowledge in a person that said religion on its own can be taken for a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, especially when considered as the creation. In simple terms, this implies any relationship between man and the super humans. The impact that religion make in the society in terms of the growth, stability, maintenance of peace and order among others cannot be estimated. It go a long way in enhancing at individual level the relationship between individuals and also enhances the relationship of one group and another. This paper tries to discover or uncover the impact that religion and religious groups make in maintaining the stability, and smooth running of the society. The researcher made use of random sampling method in the data collection process not leaving out the use of questionnaires in the process of collecting data. The researcher concluded the work by pointing out the ways that certain religious groups or organization could enhance their relationship with other religious groups thereby enhancing the persistence and continuity of the human society.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to carry out a survey on Cost-reducing and Laboratory Management Strategies employed by Physics teachers in Secondary Schools in Bauchi and Gombe States. The descriptive/survey research design was used and the instrument for data collection was Questionnaire, titled, “Cost-reducing and Laboratory Management Strategies”. The population for the study was all the physics teachers in secondary schools in Bauchi and Gombe States where physics was taught as a subject and had physics laboratories for practical lesson. This population was chosen purposefully based on stratification according to ownership (Government- owned schools). The study achieved 96% responses and all the responses from the (instrument) responding schools were analysed using mean, and standard deviation. Hypotheses were tested using One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) at 0.05 level of significance. The findings indicated that, in terms of cost reducing and laboratory management strategies, physics teachers highly employed cost- reducing and laboratory management strategies. In relation to physics teachers’ influence of years of teaching experience on the two variables, findings indicated, among others, that there was no significant difference in their mean responses. It was recommended that physics teachers should be encouraged to attend workshops, seminars and in-service training. These would assist physics teachers to acquire knowledge on cost- reducing and laboratory management strategies for effective learning

POVERTY REDUCTION STRATEGIES IN NIGERIA: IMPACTS AND IMPLICATIONS

Shehu El-Rasheed

Department Of Economics and Development Studies, Federal University, Kashere, Gombe State

ABSTRACT

The rising poverty incidence and its implication on achieving the goal of sustainable economic development has been a major issue of discourse among economists and policy makers. In Nigeria despite recording an impressive growth(averaging around 6.5 percent) over the past decade, the growth could not be translated into a sustainable welfare and wellbeing of the majority citizens of the nation. The menace of poverty has become so worrisome to the Government having identified poverty with most of the developmental challenges such as insecurity, crimes and other social vices that retard economic progress. Various Governments over the years came up with poverty alleviation programmes to reduce the menace. This paper reviews theses programmes and policies adopted by different administrations and evaluate their successes or failures. Most of the programmes/Policies failed to achieve their desired objective due to lack of commitment on the part of the government, corruption and bureaucratic bottlenecks. Suggestive measures are that Government should refocus their policies on poverty alleviations to directly address poverty at the rural areas by creating job opportunities.
